The church of Kildonan, which was dedicated to St Donan, was formerly a prebend of Dornoch Cathedral and records ministry from 1567, in the person of Andrew Bain, reader. During the time of the Sutherland clearances in the early 19th century many inhabitants of Kildonan emigrated to the Selkirk Colony of Manitoba in Canada, where they established a settlement by the name of Kildonan and where they erected a church which was a replica of their former Scottish place of worship. The Parish Church of St Donan's, Kildonan, was restored in 1918 and in 1948 the charge was united with Loth to form the session of Kildonan and Helsmdale Loth. The Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Dornoch (but for one year between May 1726 and May 1727 when it was transferred to the Presbytery of Tongue) until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Dornoch and the Presbytery of Tongue were united together under the name of the Presbytery of Sutherland. |
