The Parish Church of Old Scone was dedicated to St Monenna and once belonged to the ancient Abbey of Scone, which was founded in the 12th century by Alexander I. After the reformation in 1560 it is thought that the Abbey Church became the parish church and remained so until 1624, when a new Church was erected a short distance to the north of the Abbey, to replace the old building, which had fallen into a ruinous state. In 1805 most of the village of Old Scone was removed to be replaced with an estate constructed for the recently rebuilt Scone Palace. The population of Old Scone was consequently transferred to the newly planned nearby village of New Scone, where a new parish church was erected using the stone taken from the previous building at Old Scone. The dismantled church had only been constructed some 20 years earlier. The Kirk Session of Scone Old sits within the Presbytery of Perth. |
