The kirk session of Alness, which was once a prebend of the Cathedral of Fortrose, records ministry from 1560 in the person of Thomas Ross. In 1929, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Alness Parish Church united with the former united Free Church congregation of Alness. A number of years after the union in 1939 the parish church, which had been built in 1780, was abandoned due to the roof being in a hazardous condition. The old church was later de-roofed and the walls were made safe in 1970. Alness Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Dingwall, later of Chanonry and Dingwall, and following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Ross. |
