The church of Linton, which is thought to date back to the 12th century existed, prior to the reformation, as an independent rectory, the patronage of which belonged to the Lords Sommerville. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1571 in the person of Thomas Moffat. In 1957 Linton was linked with Makerstoun but this arrangement was terminated in 1962 in favour of a link with Sprouston, which in turn was also terminated in 1974, and in the same year a further link was made effective between Linton and Morebattle and Hownam with Yetholm. The Kirk Session sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Kelso and later of Jedburgh. |
