A church was first founded at Torthorwald in the mid 13th century by the Red Friars from the Monastery of Fail (the ruins of which are still visible today) and up to the reformation in 1560 Torthorwald belonged to the Ministry of Fail. In 1959 Torthorwald established a link with Mouswald however this arrangement was terminated in 1980 in favour of a link in the following year between the three congregations of Tinwald, Kirkmichael and Torthorwald. In 1999 the three linked charges were united together to form the Parish of Kirkmichael, Tinwald and Torthorwald. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. The present church building of Torthorwald was erected in 1782, on the site of an earlier construction. |
