The church of Madderty was dedicated to St Ethernan and formerly belonged to the Abbey of Inchaffrey, which was founded in 1200 by Gilbert, Earl of Strathearn. The church was rebuilt in 1668. In 1935, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Madderty Parish Church (also known as Madderty Abbey) united with the former United Free Church congregation of Madderty High. After the union both churches remained in use. In 1962 Madderty formed a link with Trinity Gask and Kinkell however this link was later terminated in 1984 in favour of a linkage with Fowlis Wester and Monzie. The kirk session sat thin the presbytery of Auchterarder, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Perth. |
