The Kirk Session of Bowden was established following the Reformation in 1560. Ministers to the parish are recorded from 1568. Bowden formed part of the Presbytery of Selkirk until 1929, when it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose. With the restructuring of presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles. In recent years, several changes have been made to the parish: from 1977 to 1983, it was linked with Ashkirk with Lilliesleaf; and from 1983 to 1994 simply with Lilliesleaf. In 1994, the linkage with Lilliesleaf was terminated and it was instead linked with Newtown. |
