In ancient times Dunkeld was the seat of a Celtic Abbey and the vicarage of Dunked existed, up until the time of the reformation, as a very small parish, its parochial boundaries reaching barely further than the town of Dunkeld its self. There formerly existed no parish church, with all church services being held within the Cathedral, however in 1560 the Cathedral was made the parish church of Dunkeld. At a time prior to the middle of the 17th century the parishes of Dunkeld and Dowally were united together and in 1818 the old Parish church of Dowally was restored and later became a mission chapel for the united parish. In 1931, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Dunkeld and Dowally joined with the former United Free Church congregation of Dunkeld East. A further union followed in 1974 when Dunkeld and Dowally joined with Little Dunkeld to form the session of Dunkeld. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dunkeld until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Dunkeld and Meigle. |
