Description |
The church of Bellie was dedicated to St Peters and it is thought that as early as 1153 the parish was founded by Monks from the Priory of Urquhart. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of George Hay. In 1728 reconstruction work began on the old church of Bellie, which had fallen into a ruinous state, however despite that fact that the renovation work was completed in 1733 it was subsequently agreed that a new church should be erected in Fochabers and in 1797 the new building was opened. In 1947 Bellie was united with the former United Free Church of Fochabers Pringle Memorial. After the local union the session continued under the name of Bellie and in 1982 the former Pringle Church building was sold. In 1959 Bellie formed a link with Speymouth. Bellie Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Strathbogie, later of Elgin and, following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Moray. United with Fochabers Pringle Memorial (CH3/685) 30.11.1947. United with Speymouth 1959 (CH2/839). |
