The parish of Dowally was disjoined from that of Caputh in 1500 by Bishop Broun who additionally in that year rebuilt the ancient Chapel of St Muireach within the parish and renamed the new building St Anne's. At a time prior to the middle of the 17th century the parishes of Dunkeld and Dowally were united together and in 1818 the old Parish church of Dowally was restored and later became a mission chapel for the united parish of Dunkeld and Dowally. In 1931, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Dunkeld and Dowally united with the former United Free Church congregation of Dunkeld East. A further later union followed in 1974 when Dunkeld and Dowally joined with Little Dunkeld to form the session of Dunkeld. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dunkeld until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Dunkeld and Meigle. |
