The Parish of Aberdeen East first originated in 1577 when a Second Charge was founded for the Parish of St Nicholas, also in Aberdeen. After a time Aberdeen began to experience rapid population growth and in order to accommodate the according increased demand for public worship, services in connection with this Second Charge were held in the choir of St Nicholas's Church. It later followed on the 5th March 1828 that the Court of Teinds disjoined the East parish from St Nicholas and in the same year the new East Parish was granted the revenues and the duties of the Second Charge. The Second Charge of St Nicholas, having been erected as the new East Parish, also had the choir and crypt of St Nicholas's assigned to it to serve as the East Parish Church. In 1954 Aberdeen East St Nicholas united with the parish of Aberdeen North and Trinity to form the session of Aberdeen St Nicholas North and East. The name of the united session was changed in 1976 to that of Aberdeen East of St Nicholas and in 1980 an additional union was formed with West of St Nicholas under the name of Aberdeen Kirk of St Nicholas. |
