The church first built in 1823 to serve the district of Greenock North was originally known as Blackhall Street Chapel. In 1834 the General Assembly erected it as a separate charge and in 1836 it was granted constitution as a chapel and had a district assigned to it. The old West Church, which had been erected in 1592 for the parish of Greenock, was however restored in 1840 and made a chapel for the north district of Greenock. It later followed in 1872 that the North parish was disjoined from Greenock West and erected as a separate parish quoad sacra. In 1979 Greenock North and Greenock St Columba Gaelic were united to form the session of Greenock: Old West Kirk. |
