The old church of Inverness (First Charge), which was dedicated to St Columba, formerly belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Inverness, as with most villages and towns in Scotland, was experiencing rapid population growth and as a result, a need was created for additional accommodation for worship. In response to this requirement a second charge (sometimes called Inverness West) was established in 1624, and a third charge (St Mary's) was later set up for Gaelic services in 1641. Much later in 1929, when the United Free Church passed back to the Established Church, the original church at Inverness (First Charge) became known as Inverness the Old High to differentiate it from the several former United Free charges. In 1971 Inverness Old High was linked with Inverness St Stephen's. |
