The old church of Rathen was dedicated to St Ethernan and belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath prior to the 14th century, when it was granted to the Diocese in Aberdeen and where it remained until the reformation in 1560. A new church was erected in the parish in 1870, replacing an earlier building whose ruins can still be seen and whose churchyard was the burial place of the great grandparents of the Norwegian composer Edvard Greig. In 1958 Rathen (known in later years as Rathen West) was linked with Lonmay . The kirk session sat with in the Presbytery of Deer until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Buchan. |
