Kirkpatrick-Juxta in Annandale was named so during the 15th century in order to distinguish it from four other churches of St Patrick which existed, along with Kirkpatrick-Juxta, within the See of Glasgow, namely: Kirkpatrick-Irongray, Kirkpatrick-Durham, Kirkpatrick-Fleming and Kirkpatrick-Nithsdale. The title Juxta was given due it having the closest proximity to Glasgow, the seat of the Bishop. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of Mungo Neving, reader. In 1959 Kirkpatrick-Juxta formed a link with Wamphray, this arrangement however was terminated in 1971 in favour of a linkage with Johnstone. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Lochmaben, later of Annandale and following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Annandale and Eskdale. |
