The parish of Longside, which was known of old as the Ower Kirk of Peterugie, was disjoined from Peterhead in 1620. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1619 in the person of Alexander Martin. The church was built in around the same year by William, Earl Marischal and was later rebuilt in 1620 and again in 1836. In 1950, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Longside Parish Church united with the former United Free Church congregation of Longside West. After the local union the Longside West Church was sold. A further union followed with Blackhills in 1970, under the ministry of Rev. H Greenwood, minister at Longside. The united session continued under the name of Longside. Longside Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Deer, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Buchan. |
