Edinburgh Charteris Memorial St Ninian's Mission Church was first opened on the 24th May 1912 as a memorial to Archibald Hamilton Charteris, who was the founder of the Guild of Scotland and Moderator of Assembly in 1908. Until 1934 the minister of Charteris Memorial was an assistant at St Cuthbert's parish church but in that year the General Assembly gave a special constitution to the church which raised its status to effectively that of quoad sacra. In 1953 Pleasance united with Charteris Memorial under the name of Charteris Pleasance and following the local union the Pleasance church was sold in 1954. In 1969 Buccleuch was united with Charteris-Pleasance and also with Nicholson Street to form the session of Kirk O'Field. In 1984 St Paul's' Newington was joined to Kirk O'Field. The kirk session has sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh throughout its existence. |
