In 1754 Buccleuch church was first proposed as a Chapel-of-Ease to St Cuthbert's and the church was opened shortly afterwards in 1756. The church was erected in place of the Little Kirk, which had been built in 1593 as an additional church at the west end of the pre-reformation church of St Cuthbert's, and which was later destroyed in 1650 by the Ironsides of Cromwell In 1834 the parish was disjoined and erected by the General Assembly as the Parish of Buccleuch quoad sacra, it was later erected by the Court of Teinds in 1859. In 1969 Buccleuch was united with Charteris-Pleasance and also with Nicholson Street to form the session of Kirk O'Field. In 1984 St Paul's' Newington was joined to Kirk O'Field. The kirk session has sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh throughout its existence. |
