During the early 17th century the people of South Queensferry, having no church of their own, had to travel some distance to their nearest place of worship, which was the Dundas owned Priory Church at Dalmeny. To add to the dissatisfaction with the lengthy journey to Damleny, the church could no longer cope with a growing congregation and so in 1633 the foundation stone of the Church of Queensferry was laid. The building was completed in 1635 and in that same year the parish was disjoined from Dalmeny and erected by the Commissioners of Parliament into a separate parish, which was later ratified by parliament in 1641. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1635 in the person of Robert Gibson. In 1956 the Old Parish Church of Queensferry was united with the former United Free Church congregation of South Queensferry St Andrew's, under the name of Queensferry Parish Church. Following the union both churches continued in use for a time however the former St Andrew's church later became the parish church and the old parish church was sold in 1970. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Linlithgow and later of Linlithgow and Falkirk, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
