The church of Lochmaben was dedicated to St Magdalene and there existed within the parish boundaries a chapel at Rokele, later called Rockhall. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of Alexander Gardner. In 1592 the parish church of Lochmaben was destroyed by fire by the Johnstones of Armadale in an attempt to secure the surrender of the Maxwells of Nithsdale, who, after being defeated in a fight with the Johnstones, had taken refuge in the church. The church was replaced by a Gothic building which stood until 1818, when it was demolished to make way for a new church, opened in the following year. In 1955 Lochmaben parish church was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Lochmaben St. Margaret's. Applegarth and Sibbaldie later formed a link with Lochmaben in 1980. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Lochmaben, later of Annandale and, following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Annandale and Eskdale. |
