The church of Thornwood was erected as a Church of Scotland Mission Chapel within the bounds of the Parish of Bothwell. Within the area two schools, namely that of Nackerty and of Tannochside were, for reasons of necessity, being used by parishioners as places of worship. The two venues however were highly unsuitable and it was proposed in 1891 that a mission church be erected. Sufficient funds were raised by the subscribers for the proposed new church and once a suitable site had been established building commenced in 1892. In the following year, on the 24th September, the Mission Church of Thornwood was opened. In 1933 Thornwood formed a union with the congregations of Bothwell Park and Uddingston Aitkenhead under the name of Uddingston Viewpark. After the union Thornwood Church remained in use as the place of worship. The kirk session of Thornwood sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
