The church of Kirkmabreck was dedicated to St Brioch and formerly belonged to the Abbey of Dundrennan. Kirkmabreck was united by the Commissioners of Teinds in 1618 to the parishes of Anwoth and Kirkdale, however in 1636 Kirkmabreck and Kirkdale were severed from Anwoth and formed a united charge by themselves. The church of the united parish was sited at Kirkmabreck but in 1637 was removed by Act of Parliament to an alternative location, namely Creetown, in 1834 this church was rebuilt. In 1937 Kirkmabreck Parish church was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Creetown Trinity. After the local union the session remained under the name of Kirkmabreck and the old Creetown Trinity church became a hall. In 1995 Kirkmabreck was linked with Monigaff. The kirk session sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright until 1699 when the General Assembly transferred it to the Presbytery of Wigtown. In 1963, again by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Wigtown and the Presbytery of Stranraer were united together to form the Presbytery of Wigtown and Stranraer. |
