The Kirk Session of Carsphairn was established in 1640 when it was disjoined from the parishes of Kells and Dalry and erected into an independent parish. The General Assembly gave approval of the erection of the parish in 1645 and in that same year it was also ratified by Parliament. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1537 in the person of James Adamson. In 1815 the parish church, which had been built by the heritors and inhabitants of the parish in 1635, was rebuilt. Carsphairn Parish church united with the former United Free Church congregation of Carsphairn North in 1930 and the former North church was later sold in 1938. Dalry and Carsphairn formed a link in 1972 but this was later terminated in 1992 and in 1994 a further link was established with Balmaclellan and Kells with Dalry. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kirkcudbright until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
