The parish of Ladykirk was previously known as Upsettlington but was renamed Ladykirk when James IV, having nearly drowned in the Tweed, built a church here in 1500 as a mark of thanks. He dedicated the church to the Virgin Mary and in doing so is believed to have changed the name of the village and the parish. At a time prior to 1600 Ladykirk was united with the ancient parish of Horndean, the church of which was dedicated by Bishop David de Bernham in 1243. The church of Ladykirk, which was restored in 1743 and again in 1861, is known to be the place where the last treaty between Scotland and England was concluded by commissioners in the time of Queen Mary. Whitsome and Ladykirk were linked together in 1955 and a further link was formed in 1978 with Fogo and Swinton with Leithholm. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Chirnside and later of Duns. |
