The church of Garvock was dedicated to St James and formerly belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of James Symmer, reader. In 1963 Garvock was united with St Cyrus under the name of Garvock St Cyrus and the session of Mearns Coastal was later formed in 1998 when Garvock St Cyrus united with Benholm and Johnshaven. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Fordoun and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. |
