The church of Lochwinnoch, which was dedicated to St Gwinoch, formerly belonged to the Abbey of Paisley. In 1504 Lord Sempill, who died at Flodden in 1513, built the Collegiate church of St Mary's Lochwinnoch, which now stands in ruins within the parish. Lochwinnoch church was rebuilt at the later date of 1806. In 1947, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, the Parish Church of Lochwinnoch (which had become known as Lochwinnoch St. John's) was united with the former United Free Church Congregation of Lochwinnoch West. After the local union both churches remained in use for two years until the former West church and hall were sold. The united session was named simply Lochwinnoch. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Paisley. |
