The church of Dunbar was founded as a collegiate church in 1342 by Patrick, ninth Earl of Dunbar, and was the first college kirk to be established in Scotland. The prebends of Dunbar, which was dedicated to St Beya, were: Pinkerton, Belton, Whittinghame, Pensheil, Duns, Stenton and Spott. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1560 in the person of John Manderton. The church was extensively repaired in 1779 and in 1819 the last service was held in the old church which was closed in that year to make way for a new building, later opened in 1821. In 1966 Dunbar Parish church, known as Dunbar Old, was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Dunbar Abbey, following the union the session was simply called Dunbar. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dunbar and later of Haddington and Dunbar until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Lothian. |
