The foundation stone of the Church of St Leonard's was laid in 1878 by the Lord High Commisioner. The name St Leonard's was derived from an ancient Hospital and chapel that had existed within the area. In 1879 the church was opened as a Chapel-of-Ease for Newington but in the same year was destroted by fire. A new church was erected and opened in 1880. St Leonard's was designated quoad sacra and given a parish area, formerly belonging to St Cuthbert's, in 1884. In 1932 Edinburgh Newington was united with the congregation of St Leonard's and after the union the St Leonard's Church and hall were sold to The Church of Christ. The old parish church of Newington remained in use for public worship. The united congregation, which was named Newington and St Leonard's, was later dissolved in 1976 due declining numbers caused by depopulation of the area. The kirk session formerly sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh and the Synod of Lothian and Tweedale. |
