The church of Edzell was dedicated to St Laurence and the parish prior to the reformation existed as a rectory. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of Thomas Ramsay, reader. In 1658 the old parish of Newdosk was united with Edzell and a new church was later erected in 1818. In 1940, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Edzell Parish Church (known as Edzell North) was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Edzell South. A further union followed in 1953 with Lethnot and Navar under the name of Edzell and Lethnot. The united session was later linked with Glenesk in 1982 and with Fern Carestoun Menmuir in 1997. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Brechin and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
