The kirk session of Newington was declared a parish quoad sacra by Act of General Assembly in 1834 and was named Newington and erected by the Court of Teinds in 1859. The parish church was formerly the Hope Park Chapel-of-Ease under St Cuthbert's. In 1932 Edinburgh Newington was united with the congregation of St Leonard's and after the union the St Leonard's Church and hall were sold to The Church of Christ. The old parish church remained in use for public worship. The congregation was later dissolved in 1976 due declining numbers caused by depopulation of the area. The kirk session formerly sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh and the Synod of Lothian and Tweedale. |
