Prior to the reformation the church of Ecclesmachan, which was dedicated to St Machan, belonged to the Preceptory of St John at Torphichen. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1563 in the person of John Mowbray. The parish of Ecclesmachan until 1891 consisted of two portions which were separated by a strip of Linlithgow parish, in that year however the two portions were united by transferring the dividing strip of Linlithgow Parish to Ecclesmachan. In 1976 a union was formed with Uphall North under the name of Strathbrock. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Linlithgow and later of Bathgate until 1964 when the name of the Presbytery of Bathgate was changed by the General Assembly to the Presbytery of Linlithgow and Bathgate. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of West Lothian. |
