The Parish of North Leith was erected by Act of Parliament on the 9th July 1606, having previously been ratified and approved by the General Assembly in 1602. The church, which was acquired by the inhabitants of Leith in or around 1586, formerly existed as the Chapel of St Ninian's, built by Robert Bellenden, Abbot of Holyrood in 1493. In 1736 the church was largely rebuilt and in 1816 a newly erected church was opened on an alternative site. The old building, having grown too small for the congregation, was sold. The church suffered war damage in 1941 and consequently underwent a restoration and renovation in 1948-1950. In 1968 a union was formed between Leith North and Leith Bonnington under the name of Leith North and Bonnington and in 1982 a further union was established with Leith St Ninian's. The new united session was called Leith North. The Kirk Session of Leith North sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
