The church of Mouswald was dedicated to St Peter and ministry of the session is recorded from 1569 in the person of Thomas Weir, reader. In 1609 a union was formed by act of parliament between the parishes of Meikle Dalton, Little Dalton and Mouswald, with the church at Little Dalton nominated to act as the parish church of the united session. This union was not however to last and in 1633, again by act of parliament, Meikle Dalton and Little Dalton were disjoined from Mouswald, leaving Mouswald as an independent parish once more. Mouswald Church underwent a restoration in 1929 and was rededicated in the same year. In 1959 a link was established between Torthorwald and Mouswald but this arrangement was later terminated in 1980 in favour of a linkage with Cummertrees. A union with the charges of Cummertrees and with Ruthwell and Mound Kedar took place in 2011, and the united congregation took the name of Cummertrees, Mouswald and Ruthwell Church of Scotland. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Lochmaben and later of Dumfries until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudright. |
