The church of Kildalton, which was dedicated to St John the evangelist, was united, prior to the 16th century, with the parish of Oa (or Kilnachtan). This union however was dissolved in 1849 when the parish of Oa was once more disjoined and erected as a parish quoad sacra. Also around this time the Parish church of Kildalton was removed from it's location at Kildalton to Lagamhuilin. The ruins of the old church of Kildalton still stand within the churchyard. A union was formed for a second time with Oa in later years when the two congregation, along with that of Port Ellon, were united. After the union the name Kildalton remained unchanged. In 1932, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Kildalton was united with the former United Free Church session of St Columba's. The united session, which still remain under the name of Kildalton, was linked in 1962 with Kilmeny. The arrangement with Kilmeny was later terminated in 1973 and the name of the session was changed to Kildalton and Oa in the same year. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Islay and Jura, later of Islay and following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of South Argyll. |
