Edinburgh: St. Stephen's was erected into a parish by the Town Council on the 26th December 1828 and was concurred in by the Presbytery in the following month. The church was opened for worship on the 1st December of the same year. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1829 in the person of William Muir. It had been the original intention to call the church St. Vincent's and it remains recorded so in the original plans drawn up for the church. Robert Louis Stevenson attended this church and the pew where he sat remains marked with a brass plate. In 1987 St. Stephen's was linked with St Mary's but this arrangement was later terminated in 1992. A union with St. Bernard's was formed also in 1992 under the name of Stockbridge. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
