The present Morebattle parish comprises two ancient parishes, that of Morebattle and also of Moll or Mow and there were additionally two ancient chapels within the parish, one at Clifton and the other at Whitton. Ministry of the parish is recorded from 1582 in the person of Robert Ker. In 1757 a new church was built and a chancel and vestry were later added in 1899. In 1952, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Morebattle Parish church was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Morebattle St Aiden. The linked charge of Hownam and Yetholm was later linked with Morebattle in 1963 and in 1972 Hownam formed a union with Morebattle under the name of Morebattle and Hownam. After the union the link with Yetholm continued and a further link was established with Linton in 1974.
