The church of Rothes, which was dedicated to St Lawrence, formerly belonged to the Hospital of St Nicholas at the Boat of Brig on the Spey. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1563 in the person of James Leslie. Part of the parish of Dundurcas was annexed to Rothes in 1782. In 1939, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Rothes Parish church was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Rothes High. After the union the former Rothes High church was sold for use as a parish hall. Knockando, Elchies and Archiestown Parish was linked with Rothes in 1982. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Aberlour and later of Elgin, until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Moray. |
