The medieval church was dedicated to St Mary and formed a prebend for the treasurer of the Chapter of Glasgow. In 1424 Sir Thomas Sommerville of Carnwath rebuilt the church and endowed it with a Collegiate foundation. Ministry began in 1568 in the person of Thomas King, exhorter. Throughout its existence the session was within the jurisdiction of Lanark Presbytery. The church was rebuilt in 1798 and 1866. Carnwath (St Mary's) united with Carnwath Walker Memorial Church in 1938, the Memorial Church being converted into a suite of halls, and St Mary's becoming Carnwath Parish Church. |
