Kilwinning Abbey, thought to have been founded by Richard de Morville, was built during the years 1169-1189 and is believed to have been erected on the site of an ancient church dedicated to St Winning, after whom the town and parish were named. Following the reformation in 1560 the Abbey chancel was converted for use as the parish church of Kilwinning and worship continued here until 1775 when the present day Abbey Church was erected and the chancel was torn down. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Irvine and later of Ardrossan. |
