The church of Ecclesgreig was dedicated by Bishop de Bernham in 1242 and it was granted to the Chapel of St Andrews in the 12th century. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1565 in the person of John Goodfellow. In 1632 a new church was erected at a site around three quarters of a mile north of the old church and this building was later replaced in 1787. In 1933 St Cyrus was united with the former United Free Church congregation of St Cyrus West, after the union the St Cyrus West church was used as a hall. In 1955 St Cyrus established a link with Garvock however this arrangement was terminated in 1963 to permit union of the two parishes under the name of Garvock St Cyrus. The session of Mearns Coastal was later formed in 1998 when Garvock St Cyrus united with Benholm and Johnshaven. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Fordoun and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 it became part of the Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. |
