The church of Glenisla, which was dedicated to St Mary, was formerly a prebend of Brechin. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of William Mackie, reader. Glenisla church dates back to 1821, having previously been rebuilt in 1469. In 1941, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, Glenisla was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Glenisla North. After the union the former North Church was sold and later demolished. In 1967 Glenisla formed a link with the parish of Kilry and in 1980 with Lintrathen. A further link was formed in 1994 with the parish of Airlie, Ruthven and Kingoldrum. Glenisla kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Meigle until the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
