At the place which now constitutes Barthol Chapel there once stood an ancient chapel of St Bartholomew, which belonged to the Abbey of Arbroath. In 1870, Mary, Countess of Aberdeen, built a church at Barthol Chapel as a memorial to her son, George, 6th Earl of Aberdeen, who had lost his life at sea. The church was opened in 1875. His brother and successor, the 7th Earl of Aberdeen, later granted a Manse to the Church and gifted a large contribution towards it's endowment. As a consequence, the Parish of Barthol was disjoined quoad sacra from the parishes of Tarves, Fyvie, Methlick and Meldrum in 1876. In 1958 Tarves was linked with Barthol Chapel. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Ellon, later of Aberdeen and following the reorganisation of the presbyteries in 1976, Barthol Chapel became part of the Presbytery of Gordon. |
