The church of Farnell was dedicated to St Ninian and ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of John Meldrum, reader and vicar. In 1633 the parish of Kinnaird was disjoined from Farnell and erected into a separate parish. In 1787 however the parish of Kinnaird was suppressed and was once more united with Farnell, except that is for a small part of the parish which was annexed to that of Brechin. The present day church of Farnell was built in 1806. Kinnel was linked with Farnell in 1953 but this arrangement was later terminated in 1967 and in 1990 Farnell was linked with Montrose St Andrew's. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Brechin and later of Brechin and Fordoun until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, Farnell became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
