The Kirk Session of Carmylie was disjoined from the parishes of Panbride, St Vigeans and Inverkeilor and was erected, by Act of Parliament, into an independent parish in 1609. The parish church was built in the same year, on the site of a Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary that had been founded in 1500-1501 by David Stathauchine of Carmylie and ministry of the parish commenced in 1609 in the person of David Lindsay. In 1943, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Carmylie Parish Church was united with the former United Free congregation of Carmylie West. Carmylie was later linked with Arbirlot with Colliston in 1983. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath until by Act of Assembly in 1961, the Presbytery of Arbroath the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. Following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 Carmylie became part of the Presbytery of Angus. |
