The church of Bothwell, which was dedicated to Sant Bride, was constituted as a collegiate church in 1398 by Archibald , Earl of Douglas, and it was confirmed by a Charter from the King in the same year. Prior to the reformation Bothwell and Shotts formed one parish however, shortly after 1560, Shotts was disjoined from Bothwell and erected into an independent parish. Ministry of Bothwell is recorded from 1568 in the person of John Hamilton. In 1828 the old parish church ceased to be used as a place of worship and a new church was erected in 1833. In 1976 the Parish Church of Bothwell (known in later years as Bothwell St Bride's) was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Bothwell Kirkfield and Wooddean under the name of Bothwell. The kirk session sits within the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
