There is believed to have been a place of worship in Jedburgh (sometimes referred to of old as Jedworth) since 854 when, Ecgred, Bishop of Lindisfarne, built a church here dedicated to St Mary. Jedburgh Abbey was later established in around 1118 for the Augustinian Order and following the reformation a portion of the Abbey was used as the parish church. The congregation later vacated the Abbey when a new church was erected in 1875. Edgerston was linked with Jedburgh in 1973, however this arrangement was terminated in 1991 in favour of a union between the two session, under the name of Jedburgh Old and Edgerston. A temporary link had also been established with Ancrum during the years of 1976 and 1991. In 2007 Jedburgh Old and Edgerston united with Jedburgh Trinity Church of Scotland to form Jedburgh Old and Trinity Parish Church of Scotland. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Jedburgh, later of Jedburgh and Kelso and presently of Jedburgh. |
