In 1567 the parish of Orwell was disjoined from that of Kinross and erected as an independent parish. The old parish church, which sat on the shores of Loch Leven, formerly existed as a Chapel of Ease during the reign of Robert I, who is thought to have granted it to Dunfermline Abbey in 1315. Ministry of the session is recorded from 1567 in the person of James Dowie. In 1732 the situation of the parish church was removed by the Court of Teinds from Orwell to Milnathort, the remains of the old church can still be seen in the churchyard at Orwell. In 1955 Orwell was united with the Former United Free Church congregation of Milnathort, under the name of Orwell, and a link was established with Portmoak in 1978. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kinross, later of Dunfermline and Kinross and, following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976, Orwell became part of the Presbytery of Perth. |
