The church was built by Sir Alexander Carnegie of Balnamoon (Bonnymoon) in 1636, and on 17 November 1641 his lands of Careston and Pitforkie were disjoined by Parliament from Brechin and errected into the Parish of Careston, with Sir Alexander as Patron. The session was within the jurisdiction of Brechin Presbytery until the 1970s, after which time it was within the jurisdiction of Brechin and Fordoun Presbytery. The church was restored in 1905. The session was united with Fern on 4 July 1937. |
