Whilst the exact date of the erection of this presbytery is not clear it is recorded that the establishment of the court was proposed in 1581 and the Presbytery of Dumbarton was in existence by 1586. The parishes of the Presbytery were annexed from the Presbytery of Paisley. The register of the Dumbarton Presbytery commences on the 24th December 1639. Dumbarton formerly sat within the Synod of Glasgow and Ayr and later of Clydesdale. |
