The church of Guthrie was granted to the Abbey of Arbroath in the 12th century and was later erected into a collegiate church in 1479 by David Guthrie, who had acquired the church from the Abbey. During the 16th century Guthrie was united with the parish of Carbuddo (or Kirkbuddo), after the union and up until around 1682, the parishioners of Carbuddo maintained their own church at which the minister of Guthrie preached every third or fourth Sunday. The present day Guthrie parish church was erected in 1826. Guthrie Kirk Session sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath until 1952 when it was transferred to the Presbytery of Forfar. During the same year Guthrie and Rescobie were united together to form the session of Guthrie and Rescobie. Following the union both churches remained in use. In 1961 Guthrie and Rescobie became part of the Presbytery of Angus and Means when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Arbroath and the Presbytery of Forfar were united together to form the presbytery of that name and following the restructuring of the presbyteries in 1976 Guthrie and Rescobie fell within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Angus. Aberlemno was linked with Guthrie and Rescobie in 1983. |
